Song Spotlight: Dolly Creamer's Gatekeeper (a night at Zebulon)

Prior to coming onto the Zebulon stage, Dolly Creamer (lead by Sarah Rebecca Harris) had a group hug. Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town" boomed from the speakers. It seemed appropriate as the band spent early July doing a 9 stop tour in Alaska. I think a good first assumption would be that the band has an affinity for nature. Maybe that was the impetus for doing the tour, but Harris later admitted, "I realized in Alaska that I'm just not that outdoorsy. Here, you can be outdoorsy, but you don't have to be."

I am sure that tour has resulted in an immediate fan base in Alaska. How could it not, because the band's enthusiastic attitude lit a spark of joy in the Los Angeles audience as they started off the night. Harris sang with a country snarl while her band rocked out. That spark might have taken a touch longer than anticipated by Harris as she made the comment of the set, "It's Tuesday night. The best night of the week. It's silent."

That silence just wasn't allowed as she became the ultimate hype machine. It all started with fun head banging that whipped her pink hair around and then there was the Michael Jordon tongue gestures. She danced up a storm on stage, doing a back-to-back battle with her bassist. The ante kept on being increased throughout the set and once she knew she had the audience's love she jumped out into the crowd to dance with us all. It was time for some audience participation and she got everyone to wave their arms above their heads. To reward everyone for the love, she climbed atop the shoulders of her bassist and they danced around the floor and stage. How can one top that? Well, they did in a way.

Just to delay the answer to how they could top it off. The set did include an emotional balance. She mentioned that one song was inspired by a near death experience that she should not have survived. Was it a higher being who intervened? She does not know the answer to that question. She also played the always emotional Joan Osborne song "One of Us."

The song spotlight goes to "Gatekeeper." It was the final song of the set and the pinnacle moment. She had a slight apprehension in going forward with her plans, but then those from the crowd who knew what to expect yelled out, "Open the gate."  She prepped the audience by saying, "Imagine a door that you really want to open. A thing that you really want in your life. And it's inside you . . . and open the f*cking gate." She told the audience to say in their "most scarious, most hideous voice" to yell out "Gatekeeper, open the gate." One might think that you're yelling at a demon who is blocking you from what you want most. But no, the song is saying that we are the gatekeepers.

We have everything we need.

Setlist: Jimmy, Kiss Me, Like Water, Cyclone, Run Ragged, Fakehead, Deep Throat, One of Us (Joan Osborne cover), Gatekeeper.
