Song Spotlight: Gold Child's Angelina Jolie (a night at Permanent Records Roadhouse)

Gold Child (moniker for Emily Fehler) opened up the night for Gracie and Rachel at Permanent Records Roadhouse (a Sid the Cat night). Gracie and Rachel were celebrating the release of the album If We Could, Would We. In a way, this was a release party for Gold Child, as well. At the start of the year, she released her EP Angelina Jolie. It is a four track EP where she wears her heart on her shirt sleaves.

She sang three of the songs from the EP. "Used To Hate You" is about a high school relationship that ended. Based on her Instagram post on the song, it took her awhile to get over the break-up, but she now hopes him well. "On The Other Side" is about thinking that moving to Los Angeles would solve all her problems, but then realizing that she just needed therapy. I do believe that the move from Los Angeles was via New York City. All those cathartic tunes were sung in an alt pop - country style that highlighted her graceful vocals. 

Fun little note: she had her setlist on a rather colorful purple stool / side table. A design that would make an art student proud. Anyways, after her set, she had it off to the side. During, Gracie and Rachel's set, an audience member decided to use it as a stool and took a seat on it.

The song spotlight goes to "Angelina Jolie." When she moved to Los Angeles, someone mentioned that she lived near Angelina Jolie. I can get behind this. I do believe that I once overheard the workers at Trader Joe's in Silverlake / Los Feliz talk about her shopping in the store and wondering when exactly she did her shopping so that they could schedule their shift at that time. And I've always enjoyed an Angelina Jolie action flick. 

The song is about starting up in a new location and feeling optimistic about life. The lyrics of the song are written as a chronicle of her exploration of the neighborhood.
