Song Spotlight: Shoe Shopping's Glowering (a night at The Goldfish)

Shoe Shopping is fronted by Tiffany Lin and have an art nouveau approach to punk rock. Her bio has this to say about her background, "is an interdisciplinary artist working at the cross section of graphic narrative, social practice, and performance. Her varied projects parse through social conventions at odds with the natural world, utilizing drawing to investigate topics as austere as US Census data to doom metal inspired teeth people." What is doom metal inspired teeth people? I have no clue.

I'd never heard of the band before they hit the stage during Rocknite LA's showcase at The Goldfish. Taking a look through their Instagram page, I did notice that they've played with a couple bands I've seen before: El ColmoMolly Horses, and Pillow Fight. They've also hit up Old Towne Pub a couple times, a venue that I haven't been to in years and definitely need to visit before 2025 comes to a close. I really should just randomly head over there one of these nights and catch a band or two.

The band's set was an exploration into the deep recesses of the band's mind. The bassist spent most of the set either facing the monitor or Lin. Lin, herself, had the best facial expressions that went from stoic to expressionless to amused to curious all within a single song. The music was like an erratic car, jumping forward and then going full stop. There were moments where the band was discovery individual clashing chords and then there was a full stop, as if the music itself knew that something was off key. Yet, unlike freaking out inside a mechanically failing car, this band had you waiting for where they'd eventually take you. The vibrations of their music tickled the ear drums. Honestly, I think Zebulon should book this band along side Muscle Beach (you can read my review of their Zebulon set here).

From what I can tell, the band doesn't have any songs up on Spotify. They do have 3 demos up on Bandcamp (click on the link).  One of those songs was their opener of the night, "Glowering." The song is about the destruction of the world and as one is trying to escape, they end up running into the Antichrist. As they're being seduced by the individual in a blue suit and tie, they wake up and realize that it was all a dream.

He begged me to sit and dine.
I couldn't help but drink the wine.
