Song Spotlight: Neska Rose's Very Green (a night at Hotel Ziggy)

Neska Rose has to be one of the quirkiest singers in Los Angeles. She has to rank up there with Henry Hall. For better known names beyond the Los Angeles music scene, go with Amanda Palmer, Björk, and Laurie Anderson.

When she took to the Hotel Ziggy during a WFNM showcase, she spent a good portion of the set playing the guitar while standing only on her right foot. What was going on with her left foot? It was often akimbo to the rest of her body and kicking out as if attached to a disco ball. She has awesome balance, because I don't think I ever saw her going past the tipping point that would send even the Tower of Pisa crashing down.

The topics of her songs lean in that quirky direction, as well. She explained her song "You're So Beautiful" the following way, "It's about the time when I was just jealous. And I considered maybe becoming more religious. That didn't end up happening. I don't think I could ever be more religious." Another song was about how she was told by someone that he couldn't marry her because she was a baby. She mentioned that she was initially upset, but then realized that she was a baby.

The audience had fun with her quirky style. During one song, a group of people got involved in a circle dance. She responded to that with a, "It was a group effort. We did it together." As her set was coming to an end, her manager (or mom) pointed out that she had skipped a song called "Sore." She responded with a sarcastic Gen Z take, "Okay, sure. No." That had the audience in titters. Instead, she shifted to "Dress" which is about a . . . well, I'm not going to explain it, because it might just get me in trouble. The audience response to the song did get her laughing hysterically.

Her part in the WFNM showcase was interesting. The night was filled with pop vocalists with the ability to hit the notes while her set was like searching for that European underground music bar that everyone knows about, but has a mystical address that one can walk right pass without realizing you've arrived.

The song spotlight goes to "Very Green" that has a comedic backstory. She mentioned that she is a vegetarian. Her friends knew this, but they would make her eat stew that had meat in it. So she would have to spoon out the stew while avoiding the meat, but she still felt guilty because it was like she was eating meat. The song initially talks about the stew, but then take a detour into demanding some physical attention.

And if you don’t pull up
Then I will bang your roommate on the couch
