Adrian Bourgeois took the opening slot at Harvard & Stone during a Swyndle night. Here's how I ended up catching his set. For those who've read my blog, you know I'm on this commitment to reduce how many nights a week I go out to catch live music as compared to last year. A big reason for this is because I'm focusing more on this blog site. I already had my week planned out and then I happened to notice that Wymn was playing a set on this particular Swyndle night. I hadn't seen them play for a few years so I was thinking I would do a quick drop by -- target 9:15 p.m. I got curious and decided to briefly check out the Instagram pages of everyone playing this particular night. When I clicked on Adrian Bourgeois' Instagram page, I noticed that he follows me on Instagram. From what I could tell from scanning my archives, I'd never seen him perform. What did I conclude? He's kind enough to follow me on Instagram, I should check out his music.

Wearing a fedora hat, he took to the stage to play a solo set with a guitar and tenor vocals. I was swept away by both his blissful guitar playing and vocals that reminds one, per his bio, of Elvis Costello. He had other singers listed, but I'll go with Elvis Costello, because coincidentally a couple days earlier I was listening to Costello on Spotify.
More from his bio: He is an old fashioned sort of artist in that the songs he writes are inspired by moss-covered monuments, soldiers with umbrellas, merry-go-rounds that come to life, and reading other peoples’ minds.

An interesting mix of historical reflection and fantasy.
In terms of reflections and fantasy, he told an amusing story about when he was turned away at Harvard & Stone, "I moved to LA from Sacramento in 2013. A friend of mine from Sacramento was playing here in the first couple weeks that I lived here. So I was going to come and see him. Back in those days, I was definitely a flip flop kind of guy . . . in Sacramento you can where flip flops in any club. It is the shire there. LA is Gondor. I came here and the door guy said I couldn't come in here with sandals on . . . I went back to the car. I found these rags. And I wrapped my flip flops with them and I put rubber bands. I came back to the door and he still wouldn't let me in."

He shared his love of The Beach Boys so it seems appropriate to highlight "Nothing Can Hurt Me," which he stated is his song that sounds most like that band.
A heads over heels love song dedication.
To know youOh what a dream
Just to know you
Oh what a free fall
