One thing I've noticed is that Happy Sundays Fest is very loyal to bands that have played their festival in the past. UGHH mentioned that this year marked their 4th year at the festival. Julez and the Rollerz mentioned that it was their second time playing the festival. Interestingly enough, I first came across both bands during their Happy Sundays sets (to be honest, UGHH was at a pre-Happy Sundays Fest event). This also means that if you miss a band at the festival there is a possibility of catching them at a future edition of the festival. That is what happened this year when Hex Code took The Bamboo Club stage on Saturday. They had also played the festival last year. I happened to miss that set as I was toggling between Self Improvement and Zzzahara. And similar to UGHH and Julez and the Rollerz, this was my first time catching them live.

For those who read this blog regularly, you know I love to go back in time when talking about bands. So yes, this was my first time ever crossing paths with Hex Code, but this isn't my first time crossing paths with one of the members of the band. Lead vocalist and keyboardist Mary Animaux is someone I've followed for years via a band called Jail Weddings. When did I first come across Jail Weddings? Oh, so so long ago at long lost venues such as the Bootleg Theater, Echo Country Outpost, and The Satellite. I also caught her in the band Sirens in the Night, which I would say was an offshoot of Jail Weddings. If you click on that Instagram link, you'll find a photo that I took at Harvard & Stone.

How would I describe Hex Code? Psychedelic punk surf music. They grinded through their set with Animaux's vocals punctuating the air. She played that keyboard from every possible angle.
Comment of the set: I talk too f*cking much.
This was said after Animaux was talking about the various bands that she had seen at the festival and how eager she was to see the upcoming band and then the drummer just kicked off the next song.

The song spotlight goes to "Walk Into It" from their 2024 album True Crime Wave. Honestly, that sounds like a Jail Weddings inspired album title. Maybe it is. The song is synth 70s twister of a song. It is a song seemingly inspired by The Matrix.
