Tijuana Panthers were the headliners of Echo Park Rising and based on the response from the audience, they exceeded expectations at the Echoplex. Considering the fact that the band has been around since 2005, one would think that there would be a more Generation X / Millennial vibe to the crowd, but the venue was mostly filled with those in their twenties. The band enjoyed the adoration and at one point they told the audience, "You guys are wild."

Though maybe the band didn't always appreciate the crowd. At one point, two individuals jumped up on stage and walked off with two of their three setlists. One guy jumped up on stage and took off with bassist Daniel Michicoff's setlist. The band mentioned this and then placed guitarist Chad Wachtel's setlist between the two of them. Almost immediately a gal jumped onto the stage and took that one, waving it to the audience. That left the trio looking at drummer Phil Shaheen's setlist. Luckily, no one took off with that setlist until someone got the courage after the encores to jump on stage and walk off with it.

An enjoyable time throughout the set was when two women from the Bob Baker Marionette Theater joined the band on stage. They came on stage with various puppets. When a doll puppet was brought out on stage, Michicoff could be seen dancing with it (and the woman operating it). At another moment, a puppet was brought up to the edge of the stage and the operator made it look like it was leaping off the stage to crowd surf.

The band's surf rock lived up to the "surf" part of that description. It took a few songs before someone finally got the courage to jump up on stage. Now the first person was drunk and just wanted to dance in front of the crowd. He actually got too close to the edge and slipped right off the stage which is maybe three feet above the floor. Everyone could hear his body crashing onto the cement floor. Luckily, he wasn't injured (or maybe he woke up in pain come Sunday morning) and quickly got back onto the stage. The sound guy wasn't having any of it and forced him off the stage.

That did open up the floodgates; however. Throughout the remaining part of the set, people left their inhibitions behind and climbed onto the stage to crowd surf. Some people would get to the edge of the stage and then the song would end. They would be stuck up there until the next song started and off they went on their crowd surfing. A handful of people took too long to do their crowd surf so the sound guy would come over, indicating that they needed to get going on their crowd surfing or just get off the stage.

The vast majority of their setlist was from 2015 or older. Only two songs that were played came from the current decade.
Such a good time.
