Review: All Things Blue bids farewell to Los Angeles under The Goldfish spotlight

I first crossed paths with All Things Blue in 2019 at The Hi Hat. The symmetry of life had me at The Goldfish (the former location of The Hi Hat) in late August to catch a farewell set. All Things Blue is the moniker for lead singer India Coombs. She announced earlier in the month that she was taking off to New York City after spending the last 11 years in Los Angeles.

Coombs and her band started off the set by gathering next to drummer Lexi Vega (of Mini Trees). There was a final team huddle and a hand stack. Meanwhile, the stage was awash in blue. It seemed like an appropriate color to start off the set.

Initially the crowd was a bit standoffish as is the culture of the Los Angeles music scene, but with a wave of the hand, Coombs was able to get everyone to crush the front of the stage. With that move forward of the crowd, it became much easier to identify all the familiar faces in the audience who were there to say farewell.

With signature raw vocals, Coombs and band entertained the crowd with their alternative rock tunes. For the banger "Get Away," the band put on the wrap-around sunglasses. It is meant as an out-of-character moment as the lyrics tell the story of the record label proposing that they'll engineer her vocals to be "breathy and sweet." A couple songs later, the collaboration song with Mini Trees, "sleep through," was played. What better moment then this particular night to have that song on the setlist with both of them on stage together.

For those who might be wondering if this farewell also indicate a shift in life priorities, Coombs ended the night with an unreleased single "Playground Bitch." Three friends from the crowd were pulled up onto the stage to provide background vocals. Music will still be released.

The night ended with a blue spotlight shining on Coombs. It was mentioned on her Instagram page that she's "trying desperately to be in the spotlight" for her farewell set. It looks like The Goldfish had seen that post.

Comment of the set in regards to the band: Let's hear it for all these beautiful people here. That's all I got.

My favorite memory while catching All Things Blue was back in 2021 at Zebulon. Also playing that night was Slugs (lead singer Marissa Longstreet was one of those in attendance at The Goldfish) and Slut Island. First, solid line-up. Second, I ended up getting pulled up on stage during Slut Island's set. Not a memory specific to All Things Blue, but it made for a night that is embedded within me.

Setlist: And So It Goes, Bad Jawn, Get Away, Something Weird, sleep through, Irish Candy, Did You Die?, Dicking Around, Playground Bitch.
