Song Spotlight: Lilliana Villines' yours (a night at Zebulon)

I've followed Lilliana Villines since late 2021 when I caught a set at the Silverlake Lounge. I happened to notice that she was playing a Rocknite at Zebulon in August. I decided I would check it out. It was the first time I would see her as the headliner. The previous times, she was opening for others.

I was especially appreciative that I noticed that she was playing a set that Thursday night. At the time, I had taken two days off work. And honestly, I didn't even get to enjoy my time off. The weekend was spent at Echo Park Rising (which was enjoyable), but my time off on Wednesday and Thursday was spent writing up multiple articles on the various bands that I saw during the festival - morning to night. Catching Lilliana Villines was a pleasant conclusion to all the writing that I had imposed on myself.

The setlist was split between released and unreleased material. I have to believe that an upcoming EP or album will to some degree be dedicated to either a love or hatred or both towards television. Included in the set were songs titled "TV Winner" and "Season Finale." For "TV Winner," someone in the crowd yelled out, "That song was so f*cking good!" Earlier in the set, her drummer (I'll also assume boyfriend) came up to the front of the stage to do a temporary microphone grab, "Doesn't her voice sound so pretty?" A kiss was exchanged.

Moment of amusement for me: during the song "Ajax Mermaids," there was a realization that something was off. Her guitarist realized that he needed to switch guitars. Villines laughed, "We've got too many guitars up here." When he switched to a different guitar, the band started off the song while he was still tuning.

Lilliana Villines does have a "pretty" voice, but her backing band still loves to raise the roof. The night started off with the song "yours" and the band spent the first 15 seconds turning up the rock volume heat. Also, the last 30 plus seconds of the song was dedicated to the band riffing as she stepped back from the microphone.

for when you work overnight

Her Bandcamp bio has this tidbit of info: Born and raised in Van Nuys, California by an astrologer, a birthday clown, and a Venice painter turned insurance agent. Songs about superpowers and supermarket parking lots.

Outside of that bio, she also mentioned during the set that she used to work at Zebulon. The band did love playing the venue, "You're the best crowd we've ever had . . . tied with Tucson." At least, they're honest.

Setlist: yours, Rules of Light, Ajax Mermaids, Ward of the State, TV Winner, Untitled Song, Uncaught, Violins, Season Finale.
