Rocknite at The Goldfish really does remind me of how the Los Angeles music scene used to be back a decade ago when music fans showed up for the full line-up of bands. (Caveat being that people generally headed to the doors, me included, before the midnight band hit the stage. I have this assumption that music fans likely have jobs that require them to be in bed before midnight. Or am I just projecting?) My experience at The Goldfish is that the place is always packed for the first band up, which on this particular August night was Baby Fischgrund. (Rocknite does not have midnight bands so it would be an interesting test of my assumption if they ever went with that model.)

Quote of the set: So many breakups. I'm giving up on girlfriends. I'm married to my guitar.
There is a strong country-folk scene going on in Los Angeles and Baby Fischgrund fits in perfectly with that genre. How long will it be before I see them playing a Grand Ole Echo and Americana Joy night? Fischgrun approached the stage with a quirky (and infectious) enthusiasm. When they circled the stage in a pirouette manner the crowd cheered. And when that cowboy hat that was lying on the stage was finally picked up for the final two songs, the crowd went wild. When there was a specific country rhythm to be played, they'd scooch over to their guitar / banjo playing side kick and the two would make sure the notes were perfectly played.

What song do I think best represents their country tunes? "If You Still Called" explores the ending of a 2021 relationship that our artist still finds painful some 4 years later -- the song is part of a 2025 EP release Good Boy.
The chorus says it all with:
I would still take your call.If you still called

It would seem that the other individual is the one who ended the love affair. Fischgrund still wonders about what is going on in the life of that former lover as the final lyrics go with questions:
Are you getting sleep?Did you fix the TV?
Are you finally feeling free?
