Janelane (fronted by Sophie Negrini) recently headlined at Permanent Records Roadhouse. It was a night to introduce a trio of recently released songs to her loving fans. That fan base includes me as I've followed the band since running across them at Echo Park Rising in 2017. She mentioned that she hadn't played a set since 2024, which shocked me. I knew I had written up two blog posts about Janelane and it all felt so recent. Time just flies by. In early 2024, I wrote up a review of her Love Letters album release party at Zebulon for US Rocker Music (you can read that article here). I actually caught three sets that year and none in 2025 (for obviously stated reason). When I noticed a couple months back that she was playing a set at Permanent Records Roadhouse, I circled the date.

Comment about potential nerves after not playing a set in so long: If I seem a little AHH, you know why.
Though no sets were played in 2025, that didn't mean that Negrini put music to the side. She was instead working on new material with two songs being released that year: "Instincts" and "Layla." In 2026, she released "OCD." Also, in the back half of the year, she joined Mo Dotti (fronted by sibling Gina) on a West Coast and European tour.
Comment of the set to start the night off. What's up guys. Wait . . . I had to make sure I was in Drop D.

That comment was made directly to the audience (not to her band) to let us know what was up prior to opening up the night with her latest single "Ocd." Of the trio of new releases, this song is the rocker of the bunch. Meanwhile, "Layla" goes dreamy and is a call back to those early years of Janelane. So of the trio of new songs, this is meant for the OGs.
To end the set, Negrini called out that the final song of the night was going to be for the "OGs." That song was no doubt on that 2017 Echo Park Rising setlist: "Killing Time." I so love that song that I made it my song spotlight back in 2024, which you can read here. I'm going to repeat myself a bit from that 2024 article, but if that song had come out in 1994, I'm sure it could have made it's way onto the My So-Called Life soundtrack.

The song spotlight goes to "Instincts." It is the first of the 2025-2026 song trilogy. The vocals are introspectively breezy. The music composition shifts the band into alt rock territory as compared to the more alt pop sounds of Love Letters. A song about feeling self-doubt creeping into one's soul.
Guess I can't fall too far from grace
If I'm not going to heaven anyway
Setlist: Ocd, Instincts, Clean, Useless, Layla, Dance Floor, Killing Time.
Will be hitting up Zebulon on June 1st.
