I've followed Kate Clover's music career since 2016 when her band ExSage had a residency at the Bootleg Theater (current location of 2220 Arts). That is nearly a decade ago. I remember having conversations about catching this awesome band called ExSage for the first time and people responding with, "You never heard of Cobalt Cranes?" Jump forward a few years and I ended up covered her solo sets twice for Buzzbands. Once in 2019 when she opened up for Death Valley Girls (you can read that article here) and another time when she was headlining her own show in 2022 (you can read that article here).

That 2022 set was the last time I caught a live set. Flash forward to 2025 and one of the hottest days of the summer. I finally got to catch another set at the Levitt Pavilion. She came out with her band, who were dressed in black suits like they were coming out of the 1960s when bands such as The Beatles dressed to impress. I'm sure they were sweating like crazy underneath those suit jackets. Clover came out to dazzle, as well, dressed in a black and white top with bold concentric circles.

The band opened it up with a loud punk rock instrumental that had the crowd whistling in delight. There was a brief moment of silence that allowed Clover to stare out into the audience. Then with relentless force, they tore through their punk rock set. Demands were made of the audience throughout to participate in the night, "How are you guys? Come on, come on. Are you guys ready? Give it up for yourselves." That all led up to the highlight of the set where she went up to the front of the stage. The one and only Joe Dana was there to lift her over the fence barrier. From there, she got a Congo line going.

Prior to their final song of the night, Clover yelled out, "My friend Joe Dana is here. He's the MC of the audience. What's up Joe Dana? He's providing the party in the pit tonight. Is that right, Joe Dana?" The response was, "Sure, I'll do that." Then she went after an old flame, "Have you ever fallen in love with somebody poor? This song is for you and your credit score. RIP." Unfortunately, the Levitt Pavilion cut them off for going over-time. I noticed on their setlist that they had already scratched out a song. Oh, so unfortunate, but what a fun set and a reunion with one of my long time favorite Los Angeles musicians.

Best song of the set for me was "Channel Zero." Ever since that song came out, it has been my favorite Kate Clover song.
Talking heads going systematic are they out of their mind, out of their mindsChannel zero going straight to static, when it's in the crossfire, in the crossfire
Setlist: Tearjerker, The Apocalypse Dream, Love You To Death, Channel Zero, Daisy Cutter, Gimme More, No More Romance, Like a Domino, Crimewave (cut due to time constraints)
