Song Spotlight: Bossi's Cassandra (a night at Bar Lubitsch)

Theatrical and expressive. Those are two words to describe Bossi's WFNM showcase set at Bar Lubitsch. Her set opened up with a 3 minute recitation of a personal poem.

So many missteps and redirects.
A thousand threads that don't connect.

One might also assume that the poem included a re-interpretation of the Bible verse about a mustard seed. Is it a stretch of an assumption? Well, the first line of Bossi's (moniker for Jennifer Lee Snowden) opening song "Kiss Me Goodbye" is: Grandma lays out my church clothes. Is she religious? That I would not know, but one can assume there are still influences.

Her Spotify bio mentions that her 2022 EP Run with Lions was written and recorded while having to overcome breast cancer for the second time. She writes that her debut album Tell All the Other Girls has the following message, "the restrictive narratives imposed on women throughout history and the personal efforts each must make to achieve self-actualization in a patriarchal world." That was reflected in another spoken poem that gave a parallel universe to the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale where the witch is a wild woman such as her song "She's Wild."

What did I notice: after her song "Good Bones," her husband went up to her and whispered something in her ear. I think he was telling her that the volume on her vocals needed to be turned up as they were unfortunately muted during the song.

The song spotlight goes to "Cassandra." It is by default the title track of her debut album as the song's lyrics include the title of the album. Greek mythology says that Cassandra was a princess who had the gift of prophecy, but was cursed so that no one would ever believe her.

Tell all the other girls like you and me
What happens when you eat from the knowledge tree.

Wait a second, is that another Biblical reference?

It should be noted that Aubrey Harris was on bass. If this were a couple years ago, I'd describe her as the go to bassist for WFNM singers. Fast forward to today, and I need to state that she is Chappell Roan's bassist.

Setlist: Kiss Me Goodbye, Good Bones, Cassandra, She's Wild, Monster In Me, Catch These Fists (Wet Leg cover), Run Baby Run.
