Song Spotlight: Eli Pafumi's If Miles Could Talk (a night at Bar Lubitsch)

WFNM and Taylor Sackson put on a joint showcase at Bar Lubitsch on a recent Thursday night. Up first for the night was crooner Eli Pafumi. The band gave a jazz-lite performance that stood out among the remaining performers that explored the Americana-folk-country genres.

At one point, Pafumi switched from guitar to keyboards. When he did that switch, the performance got very interesting in an unexpected manner. His pedal kept sliding across the temporary wood stage that was set-up. I happened to notice that after one of his songs, he was moving his pedal around, but the situation didn't dawn on me. Austyn Del (one of the band members for the next singer up Ali Angel) did notice what was going on and spent one full song on her knees, holding his pedal in place. For the next song, it was more of a collaborative effort. Austyn Del had returned to her spot at the front of the stage, standing next to Ali Angel. She gave me a look (I was next to the stage), which I knew what that meant. It was my turn to hold the pedal in place. My role did not last long. Two other individuals (one being Taylor Sackson) also took time holding the pedal in place.

He apparently wasn't supposed to be the first artist of the night, but mentioned that he was grateful that others in the line-up were willing to switch it up. As soon as they finished up their set, they were leaving for the night (he apologized to the other singers about not being able to stay for their sets). The band was off to Coachella to dress up as hippos. He suggested that if people were interested, they should search for the words Coachella and hippos on the Internet. That is what I did as I was writing up this song spotlight. The words hippos is related to an art exhibit that is next to the main stage called Network Operations that has people dressed as hippos. KESQ (a Palm Springs television station) has this quote from the artists behind the exhibit, "They say the concept is meant to highlight how modern media systems can feel overwhelming, interconnected, and difficult to interpret."

Comment of the set: I'm sitting on this bench the wrong way.

He mentioned that he was performing a number of new songs so I don't know if this particular song was played or not, but my song spotlight goes to "If Miles Could Talk." The song is the title track to his 2025 EP. Per his bandcamp commentary, the album was recorded in his studio apartment.

The keyboard progressions to introduce the song are simply delicious. It is a song about a relationship that ends just before the four year anniversary. The song is filled with tidbits of memories such as:

In the same damn cave staring at my shadow
