I got an invite to cover googly eyes' EP paint me like one of your fav american girls release party at The Peppermint Club. For all the time I've lived in Los Angeles, this was only the second time I've gone to this venue. One added incentive for heading out to the venue on a Friday night was the fact that electronic artist Kate the Dreamer (the moniker for Katie Donnelly) was opening for googly eyes. Back in 2023, I got to catch her twice and both times she played with some favorite singers. In late September, she played a WFNM showcase at Bar Lubitsch with Tender Misfit. Then in October, she played a set with Zealyn. So after about 2.5 years, I got to catch up with her once again.

What did I notice about her solo set up: her performance included two keyboards and two microphones. She made good use of both microphones throughout the set. For those 2023 sets, she went with one of each.
Comment of the set when she gave a shout out to googly eyes: You better be louder than that. She's in the back. She can hear you.

There was unfortunately not a setlist that I could see, but she did play a number of songs from her debut album STARLIT. The album is a tribute to her love of the Zodiac signs. Each Zodiac gets their focus in the spotlight. If there is confusion about the various song titles alignment with the Zodiac signs, she provides a clue via the use of paratheses. For example, the song for Gemini has the title "GEMINI (helium)."
When it came to comedy, I suppose one has to point to the end of the set. For the last song, she accidentally hit the wrong chord on her keyboard and let out an, "Oh, boy."

What is my song spotlight? I do recall one song title, which is "LEO (you are the sun)." (Okay, okay, I definitely recall the cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams.") What are the traits of a Leo. Per Allure, they're known for being vivacious, theatrical, and passionate. And that a "Leo is ruled by the sun." Hey, that aligns with the song title. How is this incorporated in the tune with dreamy vocals and quiet instrumentals?
