Avery Tucker (formerly one-half of Girlpool) opened up the night for Witch Post at El Cid a couple weeks back. (If interested, you can read my Witch Post article here.) His singer-songwriter set was played solo with an electric guitar. His vocals were filled with emotional depth. If I heard right, one of his song lyrics included the lines, "I feel life. I feel death."

He mentioned during the set that this night was his first Saturn turn, "Anything can happen tonight." Not being into astrology, I had no idea what that meant so I looked it up. Per Wikipedia, this first turn happens between the ages of 29 to 30, "Psychologically, the first Saturn return is seen as the time of reaching full adulthood, and being faced, perhaps for the first time, with adult challenges and responsibilities."
Based on my peek at his setlist, he did cut a song due to time constraints (though Alaska Reid of Witch Post) mentioned that time wasn't an issue. The final song of the night was "The Shooter." For some reason, I immediately starting thinking about John Wayne's last movie, which was called "The Shootist." Close enough.

The song spotlight has to go to "Knots." The recorded version is a duet with Alaska Reid. So what did he do? He decided to give a call to Alaska Reid to join him on stage. It took awhile (she mentioned that she had been in the green room getting dressed) for her to make her way to the stage. She mentioned that she deserved the impromptu call up, because she had once done it to Tucker. Before they started the song, she reminisced about when she was opening up for Girlpool at The Fonda Theatre. She happened to see him out in the audience, "I saw him illuminated in a blue light." She decided to just call him up to join her on a song.

During Witch Post's set, Reid gave additional details and context to the song, "He was really famous. I remember seeing him play a set at The Smell, sitting on the ground. Fast forward way way way later. Sort of spontaneously, we wrote that song 'Knots' that we sang together. Avery was wild and was like let's do a record. So we co-produced his record "Paw." There was a lot of personal crazy stuff. I feel like you can really hear that in the record. Not related to me, but it was like 70s Fleetwood Mac drama sh*t minus the cocaine." Off to the side, and out of sight, Tucker was reported by Reid to have said, "F*ck you." I'm sure it was said in jest.

Per an Instagram reel, the song is about a day at the county fair. Reid does have a love about county fairs, as it was mentioned that the Witch Post song "Tilt-a-Whirl" was also inspired by the country fair.We rode every ride at the fair . . .
Now there's no staying in all night
Without getting in a fight
I love the ending where, I swear, it sounds like how Mondo Cozmo would conclude a song.
Setlist: Big Drops, Green Sharp, About Now, Like A Road, Knots, Angel, The Shooter.
