Scout Gillett was the headliner for the post-Super Bowl party at Zebulon. It should be said upfront that the night was a mash-up of music genres -- and I say that in a positive way, because the three bands that I saw were all excellent (Lackey and Dreyted were the first two bands). Lackey and Dreyted provided the audience with punk rock performances. Gillett shifted the music genre (she did rock her way through some of her songs, but I would not call her music punk). Her website bio describes her sound as follows, "Her acumen as a lyricist and musician are on full display, blending velvety vocals with twangy guitars, lo-fi harmonica, and dreamy pedal steel across the album and merging a variety of genres into a haunting sonic landscape."

She grew up in Independence, Missouri (which is interestingly 12 miles from Liberty, Missouri where one half of The Doohickeys hails from). In 2017, she took off to Brooklyn and then recently shifted locations to Los Angeles (I'm guessing in 2025).
Noticed: She sang with such joy that she just lit up the darkly lit Zebulon stage.

Her song "Kelloggs Box" was the most rocking word spitting of her setlist. She mentioned the song was about "how f*cked up the system is." Her lyrics implies by system she means medical system, "Did you get your medical license out of a kellogs box?" She just released a music video for her song "Coney Island" (you can watch it here). The song is dreamy pop divine. Her last song of the night was the title track of her upcoming sophomore album "Tough Touch." It was a lullaby that ended the set with the word "touch."
I do believe she touched the hearts of everyone in the audience, especially those standing at the front. It did seem that she gave every individual in the front a personal look of kindness.

The song spotlight goes to her upcoming album's first single release, "Too Fast To Last." The song has diary qualities (I'm stealing that word from Jordana who used it recently at The Fable). A song that both rocks and reflects throughout. There is a search about how you approach your life. The opening lyrics seem to have this believe that good luck only lasts so long and you are destined to fall flat on your face at some point. Does one avoid all that by "just keep my distance?" Perhaps the lyrics of the song provide clues for why she recently left Brooklyn for Los Angeles.

I should mention that her album is coming out March 8th and she'll be celebrating with a European tour throughout the month. Her album release party in Los Angeles will be May 2nd at Non Plus Ultra.
