Song Spotlight: Chloe Saavedra's Physics (a night at The Fable)

Playing perhaps the shortest set I've seen in years, drummer Chloe Saavedra was the headliner at the Ryan Pollie showcase at The Fable. How short was the set? I say it clocked in at 15 minutes. She played a trio of songs from her upcoming record with the highlight being her single release "Physics." The short set was more than made up by her magnetic personality.

Saavedra is hardly new to music. When she was just a tween, she started up a band called Smoosh with her sister Asya Saavedra. They later changed the band name to Chaos Chaos. The sisters do seem to have a love for science as Wikipedia mentions that they selected the name, because it is a scientific name for a species of amoeba. And her first single from her solo project is called "Physics."

Of note, in their last tour, the band had touring Los Angeles bassist Emily Retsas join them. Saavedra herself is a touring drummer who played in the band Empress Of, which was the opener for Lorde's recent tour.

The night was all smiles and had a relaxed feel. It started off with her giving her bassist Mike Sawitzke a hand slap. Her keyboardist Elisa Bella and guitarist Kristen Castro looked on with a cheerful look. The first two songs were performed with her behind her instrument of choice, the drum kit. For "Physics" she moved over to one of the bar tables (actually within three feet of where I was sitting) where she had a Tempest drum synthesizer set up.

On Instagram, she mentioned the following about her solo project, "When I started writing for this project I tapped back into how I was as a kid . . . I really needed the solace of holing myself up in the studio. I needed something that was truly mine and couldn’t be taken away. It felt like a secret project I was building."

With the synthesizer, "Physics" has a dance beat that rewires the brain for neural stimulation. And why not throw in some STEM concepts.

Though you cannot fix the math
When you want what you can't have
Like the ocean yearns for land
When she crashes on your sand

"It is really awesome to play at my local bar. It is also kind of scary, because I need to be able to come back here." I think they'll let her back.

The packed night included Reggie Watts who sat up front to enjoy the set.
