Song Spotlight: Mystic Knights' Count (a night at The Three Clubs)

Mystic Knights came to my attention last year in June when I was invited to cover Band of Skulls at The Troubadour. The Mystic Knights were the opening band (you can read that US Rocker post here). The band name may not sound familiar to many, but lead singer Chris Cester's better known band Jet is likely a known quantity (hits include "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" and "Cold Hard Bitch").

Flash forward to January and I was invited to cover Mystic Knights specifically at The Three Clubs. You can read that US Rocker article here.

I have to say that this was the first time I walked into The Three Clubs since 2012 -- that would be when I saw Pu$$y Cow. (Who knows, maybe I went there again, but definitely this was my first time walking into the venue post-2020.) I was expecting there to be a rather small stage with somewhat dim lights. Was I in for a surprise. The venue has a full stage that ranks right up there with The Goldfish and Zebulon. There's even a riser for the drummer. The stage lights were solid. I don't know if it is like this all the time, but the crowd definitely had a Sunset Strip vibe. I immediately started thinking, "Why don't more bands that I follow play at this venue?" Let's just say I was flabbergasted -- in a good way.

Mystic Knights was celebrating the release of their second single "Count." Per their Spotify bio, they write the following about the song, "Lyrically, the song plays with the familiar ritual of counting into a track, before rejecting it altogether, serving as a pointed, tongue-in-cheek commentary on formulaic hit-making."

The song rings in at a short 2 minutes and 1 second and speeds to 230 mph immediately. Based on the smiles seen while they played the song, you know they love it.

All you gotta do if you want a hit record is count.

Hey, it isn't all that hard to make a Top 10 billboard record.

Life isn't that simple, but this band is putting their foot down to the F1 pedal (a favorite sport of Chris Cester) to keep the music alive and well.
