Song Spotlight: Anastasia Coope's Pink Lady Opera (a night at Zebulon)

Brooklyn based Anastasia Coope headlined Zebulon recently. The artist has been spending the beginning of 2026 touring the two coasts of North America (there were some stops in Canada). Her tour will conclude with short trip through Europe.

Comment at the beginning of the set, "I think I'm ready."

Her set had an atmospheric sound that started out with her opening song "Stars For People." Her drummer played some dreamy sounds as she strolled casually along the stage, her vocals echoing. She picked up a melodica to play, walking in place and nodding. The looper played back her notes in a medieval manner. It felt like the combination of each of these individual moments of the song had resulted in a portal opening up to a historical time. Maybe a time when most people in the world were able to see the stars without interference from city lights.

Her booking agency has the following bio description of her music, "Using layered recording techniques, she builds vast vocal choirs that sweep, chant, and swirl through her music, creating a phantasmic ether around her spectral timbre."

She spent much of her set gazing off into the distance, as if multi-tasking between performing and contemplating life. As if highlighting that duality, the video that played on the Zebulon screen switched between nature videos (from wondering animals to the decomposition process of bugs) and various drawings (computerized to geometrical).

The song spotlight goes to "Pink Lady Opera." Fame can be unattainable, fleeting, or Vincent van Gogh. The song is a chant to what many try to achieve and perhaps it isn't worth the effort.

Fame is simple as gold
And simple as cranes that fly over old
Castles that fell when they became old

A re-interpretation of Ozymandias.
