Song Spotlight: Jordana's Still Do (a night at The Fable)

It was one of the best Ryan Pollie's showcases at The Fable that I've attended. It ranks up there with the night that Madison Cunningham played a set (you can read about that night here). What made The Fable the place to be on the first Tuesday of February? Jordana (the mononymous name for Jordana Nye) played a short opening set for her friend Chloe Saavedra, who was having a single release party.

I have to admit I had not heard of Jordana before seeing her name pop up on the Instagram flier for the night. Does that sort of put me in the minority of Los Angeles music fans? Perhaps, but my argument is that I can only see so many bands / singers a year and I often miss those who climb the ranks. Also, one of my problems when it comes to my knowledge of the Los Angeles music scene is that I often head out randomly instead of making a concerted effort to do my research into who are the up and coming acts.

It was a packed crowd for headliner Chloe Saavedra, but I suspect many were there to catch Jordana. Yet, she needed to get the attention of the audience who was having a good time talking it up between sets. At least on this particular occasion, she had a quiet personality so it took a few moments before the crowd realized that she was trying to get them to quiet down.

She sang a short 4 song solo set (playing a guitar). Her vocals were soothing. When she did allow her vocals to roam loud, the crowd responded with enthusiasm. The crowd's enthusiasm wasn't just limited to those vocal moments. They roared their approval after each song.

"What do you want next? Do you want a love song or do you want a breakup song?" When her set reached the final two songs, she gave the crowd the impression she was giving them a choice. I do believe she already had her 4 song setlist in mind, but she was letting the crowd decide the order of the songs. The crowd wanted a break up song so she played "Anything For You" as her third song. She teased, "This is your choice, remember." Though the song title may sound like a love song, she emphasized that it was indeed a breakup song.

With the crowd deciding that they wanted to hear the breakup song first, she ended the set with the love song, "I Wanna Be." She gave the crowd a little smirk and emphasized with triumph, "This is a love song." Yes, she was going to play that love song no matter what. When she ended the set, she gave the crowd a little bit of a witchy sounding, "Bye bye."

The song spotlight goes to her second song of the night called "Still Do." She mentioned before hand that she had never played at The Fable, but had done karaoke at the bar, which she said made her more nervous than actually performing her own songs. The song is about her dad, "It's complicated." It is a wistful tune about a father who appears to have disappeared from her life before eventually returning.

And I hate to be the one that you hear it from
But I'm trying to forgive you
