Song Spotlight: Piper Leone's Joke's on Me (a night at the Bigfoot Lodge)

Piper Leone (Piper Thrams), the die hard UCLA Bruins fan (graduate) from the age of 8, took the stage at the Bigfoot Lodge for an Americana Joy showcase night. Not on the setlist was her anti-USC song "You & Usc." Yes, the SC is not capitalized. I see this as a friendly rivalry diss, because if there was a real hatred there the song would be titled "You & usc." I will say that her UCLA vs USC stance is seen in a positive light for me. Just to be clear, I am a Duke fan, but when it comes to Los Angeles rivalries, I'm in for UCLA.

Her stamp on the Americana-country scene in Los Angeles goes beyond her vocals. When she was introduced at the start of her set, it was acknowledged that she is a "wonderful dancer." As for her music, her website bio has the following, "Piper Leone writes the way she sings: with unflinching honesty, steadfast perspective, and an obvious understanding that the difference between a mundane anecdote and a good story is how you tell it."

During her set, she mentioned that she gives her songs weird titles. One such song that fit that description was "Blisters," which she said was a love song. She gave background to many of her songs. Her unreleased song "What She Did To Mine" was written after a party and is "about being dumb."

Comment of the set when seeing couples dancing to her music: Dancing is good. We love dancing.

The moment (amusing) of the night has to go to her cover of Ella Langley's song "Choosin' Texas." Her band started up the song and then . . . there was a stricken look. She looked at a band mate and said something that indicated that she'd totally forgotten the words to the song. A rescue was provided as someone began singing the lyrics. The brain fog was lifted and the floor dancing began. Hey, just an hour or so earlier, I had total brain fog about a band name so I related.

The song spotlight goes to "Joke's on Me." The country song is "about doing stupid sh*t that you know better that you shouldn't do, but you do it anyway." The joke is thinking that a former lover has changed.

Did you just come here to leave and watch me.

Setlist: Song Comin' On, Let 'Er Rip, Joke's on Me, Blisters, Next Crazy Ex, What She Did To Mine, Jack Daniels, I Wanna Call You, Magnolia (JJ Cale / Lucinda Williams cover), Suds in the Bucket, Choosin' Texas (Ella Langley cover), Cost of Loving.
