What defines suburbia? Having lived in Los Angeles county for most of my life, I've always found this a confusing concept. I grew up in Lancaster. That would definitely qualify as an exurb, not the suburbs. I currently live in Glendale. Some might say that is the suburbs, but Glendale is closer to DTLA than Woodland Hills is. It also takes a 15 minute walk to cross into Atwater Village. And anyways, I consider much of Los Angeles county as one massive population center where you really can't tell when you've crossed from one city to the next. Those were the strange thoughts that crossed my mind while catching Sidney Bird's (moniker for Sidney Hulburd) set at the WFNM showcase night at Hotel Ziggy.

The song spotlight goes to her most recent release called "Suburbia." The background to the song is that she got married and the newlywed couple decided to move from New York City to Arizona (the suburbs of Phoenix based on what she mentioned during the set), which is her hometown. They bought a house. They got new jobs. Then after a year, the two admitted to each other that they had made the wrong decision. They eventually sold their house and moved to Los Angeles.
It is, as she described, a banger and fits into her "cactus pop" genre (a type of "pop-Americana-singer songwriter" mix-up). She mentioned that both of them felt the desire to move back to the big city so I suspect the lyrics emphasize her internal conflicts on how to initially bring up the a life changing shift with her husband.

It's the comfort we’ll leave behind
Her musical lyrics focus on her life while her stage performance is influenced by the fact that she used to do stand up comedy. She had a real ability to express herself on stage. As for her lyrics, she mentioned that her song "Fire with Fire" is about her decision to abstain from drinking over the last 3.5 years. Her song "Ms. Jones" likely foretold the fact that she'd eventually find her way to Los Angeles, "She'll probably get married. At the Chateau Marmot." It is a song inspired by the Taylor Jenkins Reid book Daisy Jones and The Six. The song "Slow Down" is about the need not to speed through life. The song title is also tattooed on her arm, "Sorry, Mom, she's not here."
