Song Spotlight: Stella Prince's The Replay (a night at Bar Lubitsch)

Folk singer Stella Prince brought her talents to the WFNM showcase at Bar Lubitsch. She describes her music as Gen Z folk. The generation is making their cultural mark on America. As those who follow movie box offices, you know that Gen Z made a big splash in May. Obsession was directed by 26 year old Curry Barker. It is the rare movie that saw it's wide release (not a platform release) box office increase in the second weekend. Then Backrooms came out, which was directed by 20 year old Kane Parsons. It rather immediately became A24's biggest domestic box office movie. When it comes to folk music, Stella Prince is wanting to have a similar impact.

Her bio mentions that she is from Woodstock, NY and started taking voice lessons at the age of four. By the age of 20, she had booked over 1,000 shows. She now lives in Los Angeles. “I really have known my entire life that I was meant to do this," Prince says, with the trademark mix of humility and certainty that also permeates her thoughtful lyrics.

Armed with just her guitar, her set was a split between singing her own tunes and cover songs. The cover selections were from the 1960s and 1970s except for her John Mayer cover that took a time leap to 2006. Throughout the set, her vocals sailed wonderfully above her nimble fingerpicking and well timed guitar body slaps.

I did notice she likes to use the word "favorite." "What's Mine" is her favorite song from her older catalog. "Good Luck is Hard to Find" is her favorite song title, "It sums up Gen Z and my whole life. As we're all entering this adulthood life and learning how to do all these new things for the first time, everything is so hard and so difficult and the world is so crazy. And that's why I wrote this song."

My song spotlight goes to "The Replay." A song about when you're "trying to fall asleep at night and you keep on replaying the day over and over again in your head." The song has her singing in a Bob Dylan rhythmic style.

I saw the red flags but ignored them all, my bad

She will be playing the Moroccan Lounge on Jul 18th.
