Song Spotlight: The Cab's Back From The Dead (a night at The Fonda Theatre)

I got the opportunity to catch The Cab at the The Fonda Theatre. I covered the night for US Rocker Music. You can read the article here. Below are just some miscellaneous additional observations and my Song Spotlight.

I got to the venue early and was hanging out towards the middle of the floor. Bassist Joey Thunder happened to be talking to a friend right next to me. The friend had been to an earlier concert. He took video of the full concert and then set it off to the band. From what I overheard, Thunder watched all the videos. Lead singer Alexander DeLeon also watched the videos. One of the main reasons they watched the videos was because they wanted to see if they could make any improvements in their stage show. I appreciate a band who is looking for ways to continually improve their live sets.

For their song "La La," which is from their 2012 album Symphony Soldier the band separated the venue in half and encouraged both halves to sing louder than the other. During the back end of the set, the set took an acoustic shift with "These Are the Lies," "Vegas Skies," and "I'll Run." For "These Are the Lies," DeLeon took a seat on the upright piano.

For a few moments, the band gave the stage to their drummer Dave Briggs who unloaded on the drum kit. The venues lights also went wild in appreciation of his skills.

The Song Spotlight goes to "Back From The Dead." It is one of the tracks from their latest album Chasing Crowns and is also the inspiration for the name of their tour. The album is their first studio album in 15 years and the tour is their first headliner tour in over a decade. Why the disappearance from the music scene? Lead singer Alexander DeLeon gave an emotional speech to the crowd about the reason for the long hiatus, “About 12 years ago, I was told I was never going to be able to sing again by my doctor . . . we were touring with Maroon 5 in Australia and Asia. I scarred my vocal cords . . . I had a really rough time thinking I would never sing again, trying to figure out who the hell I was without The Cab, without my band. These four dudes stuck behind me the whole time.”

The song has a catchy pop opening and keeps it up throughout the song. To me, the song has two dual meanings. There is the recovering from a heart wrenching break-up, but also the return of the band.

Miss Guillotine, remember when we used to be a team?
