Song Spotlight: Drauve's Wool (a night at The Airliner Bar)

Drauve closed out a recent Rocknite showcase night at The Airliner Bar. They were the primary reason why I decided to drive down to the venue on this particular Wednesday night. A couple days prior, I went to Spotify and took a listen to their 2025 EP Timeline while tapping away at my work computer. The first two songs off the EP ("Wool" and "Sink In") got me hooked. If interested, I found this Atwood Magazine article (link here) where they discuss the songs from the EP.

The shoegaze-dream pop band's primary members are Victoria Draovitch and Stephen Grzenda. As per their Spotify bio, the two met in Pittsburgh and then moved to Los Angeles. I think they mentioned during their set that they've lived in Los Angeles for 6 years. Don't quote me on that. "The duo embeds emotional songwriting in dreamy, gauzy sonics. Drauve’s latest EP, Timeline, takes listeners deep into their inner world, balancing vulnerable moments with bursts of aggression." On this particular night, at least, Lee Jenkins of Essencer was on bass.

As soon as they mentioned that they're from Pittsburgh, I immediately gave them bonus points as I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. My fandom of Pittsburgh is an outlier as I don't have any connection to the city. I love the Los Angeles Lakers and Duke Blue Devils. I have connections to both Los Angeles (duh) and Durham. I'm not certain I've ever been to Pittsburgh. I know as a kid that my parents took me to Gettysburg, Lancaster, and Philadelphia. I have this vague memory of being very upset that we didn't travel through Pittsburgh.

The band kicked off their set with their lead song "YKWYD" from their debut album No Hope for Anything. "You know what you do." A dream pop introduction of the band to the Rocknite crowd. "All Nightmares" from the same album got loud cheers from the crowd. The band mentioned for "Sink In" that they were going to "pick up the beat." This wasn't a bluff, the song went escape velocity and gave Draovitch's vocals room to stretch and drift.

The song spotlight goes to "Wool." On an Instagram post, they mention that the song is about being betrayed and not being able to say anything about the situation. A song about anguish that is played with shoe-gaze passion.

I don’t wanna hear your cover ups
Your fabricated version of the truth

Noticed: I do believe that prior to the set beginning, I over-heard Draovitch saying that she had brought an extra setlist. Someone came prepared.

As a note: at least for the duration of the summer, Rocknite will be at The Airliner Bar on Wednesday nights.

Setlist: YKWYD, Wool, All Nightmares, Timeline, Sink In, Bluebird, Window, Dry, Abyss, I Don't Like You.
