Song Spotlight: ROSIE's Mr. Blue Jeans (a night at The Echoplex)

ROSIE (moniker for Rosaileen Scher) was the recent opener for Katelyn Tarver at The Echoplex. You can read my review of that night here. One thing I noticed immediately was the crossover in fans. From the very start when she sang "Never the 1," the crowd was singing the lyrics back to her.

Her Spotify bio has the following info, "A genuinely remarkable pop singer/songwriter, the 24-year-old New York native has earned millions of followers who are drawn to her music’s warmth, empathy, and candor." She is also close to her family as her manager and keyboardist is her brother Matteo.

If Scher happens to not make it in the world of music, she would seem to have a back-up plan already in mind. I believe she called the crowd her "class" twice. She also asked questions of the audience. For example, she asked if people had ever seen the TV show The Summer I Turned Pretty. She mentioned that her song is inspired by that show and the Belly and Conrad relationship or as she said "ROSIE and insert name." She even had that standard teacher question when noticing bad behavior, "Did someone say something?" Though in this case, she wasn't asking that question because of the audience behaving badly, but because they were enthusiastic about her set.

The song spotlight goes to "Mr. Blue Jeans." During the set, I wrote down, "Best song of the set?" I did put a question mark down as she was just a little over half way through her set. When the set ended, the question mark was removed. It was definitely my favorite song.

She introduced the song by saying, "If you're here for Katelyn and possibly me, you do like sad music. And this, I know. But you're like shaking your ass to these sad songs, which makes me think you're ready to shake you ass to an upbeat song. Or at least a sad song that's upbeat. Don't pretend like you don't know. I'm literally seeing it up here." She joked about how the crowd was dancing to her  downbeat song "Little Bit Better." With that, she asked the crowd to sing along with her during the chorus of "Mr. Blue Jeans." She taught them the lyrics, "I'm not gonna waste tonight on you."

The song is about "reclaiming your power" and how it is the worse feeling in the world when someone takes away your power. The song, she added, is about an LA boy. A breezy pop tune about an LA boy who canceled on her twice. When she finally thought they had an official date, he never showed up at the bar.

And I don't know what I'll do
But I'm not gonna waste tonight on you

Setlist: Never the 1, Someone You Once Had, City Woman, Little Bit Better, Mr. Blue Jeans, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Bad Breaks and Goodbyes, Liar Out of Me, Turn Red.
