Song Spotlight: Glyss' Inside My Eyes (a night at The Airliner Bar)

Back in the day, there was a band called Gliss that played the Los Angeles music scene for a handful of years. They've since moved back to their home country of Denmark. As an indication of how long I've hung out in the Los Angeles music scene, I listed them as one of my favorite new bands of 2010 (you can read that list here). The biggest name off that 2010 list would be Cold CaveNico Vega had a reunion show at the Lodge Room back in 2023. The Like spawned Z Berg and Laena (Feels). Eastern Conference Champions spawned Mondo CozmoLucy Schwartz may not play that often in the LA music scene anymore, but she's known for film and television music contributions. Not that bad of a list there.

Why do I flashback all the way to 2010 for a Rocknite showcase at The Airliner Bar in 2026? As I was looking at the Rocknite lineup for a recent Wednesday night, I noticed the band Glyss. The band name brought back pleasant memories. Perhaps it is due to the chosen name, but both Gliss and Glyss naturally have shoegaze vibes to their music.

Glyss is fronted by Solomon Rosenthal (who goes by the alias Iris Ipsum). I found this bio line on Resident Advisor, ". . . a Los Angeles-based musician, visual artist, and software designer. Their work spans electronic, experimental, and acoustic music . . . "

Their set had a spiritual element to it. One could just close your eyes and meditate to the music. Instead of facing the audience, Rosenthal sang parallel as if wanting to emphasize the band's instrumental layers over their own vocals. The band was always driving forward with their sound. There was an electric buzz that hovered above the music, guiding the band to travel just ahead of a rising storm. Friends who were at the front of the stage looked on with pride. To end the set, the guitar headstock was pressed hard against the floor. The bass was put to the side and replaced with the turning of pedal knobs.

The band mainly focused their setlist on songs from their debut album Eternal Return that came out early last year. For the Song Spotlight, I'm going the easy route and selecting what Spotify highlights as their most played tune from the album, "Inside My Eyes." It hits that electrical current all the way through the song. A song of infatuation that stirs the poet inside of Rosenthal.

Deep in your smile
Stars are falling for you

Setlist: Angel Hours, All Again, Dissipating, Inside My Eyes, Clear, Only You, Understanding.
