I'm always looking for new bands in order to do write-ups on this blog site. It was the week of New Year's Eve and so not a whole lot was happening in the Los Angeles music scene. I wanted to head out a couple nights, because I do have a goal of writing at least 3 or 4 posts a week. There are a handful of weekly promotor inspired nights that I target when looking for new bands: AM Presents Music, Rocknite LA, and WFNM. All three were shut down for the week. Not all was lost. There was one final promotor that I track that was still holding a night of music. It was Swyndle and their Monday night at Harvard & Stone.

The highlight of the night goes to Nail Polish -- a three piece band with Eric Rodriguez on drums, Dylan Smith on guitar, and Juan Vidales on bass. The band, for an older generation like myself, reminds one of The B-52s. There is a bit of the campy in their sound that includes an undertone of 365 days of Halloween.

Their drummer Rodriguez provides both the pacing and lead vocal quirky retro sound. The instrumental performance felt like the band members were off on their divergent directions. It was a discordant music arrangement that once stacked atop each other provided an electric sound.
A song that fits my description of their sound is "Haunted Spells." The song starts off with a bass beat that is later joined by sounds of bar chimes before the band launches into that The B-52s influenced sound.

You feel so high, you can't get low.
No one's crazy anymore.
I did my research while writing up this post and couldn't find a lot about this underground DIY band. I was able to locate a Youtube video where they played a short set and were interviewed. You can find the video here. They started playing sets in 2023 and have played with bands that I've seen. Their very first set was with Active Decay (in 2024, I wrote about their set for US Rocker Music, which you can read here) and they later played with Kontrol Inc (who I mention briefly in a Pink Stiletto review I wrote, which you can read here) and Pom Poms (you can read my post on that set here). What does that all mean? It means they know some cool Los Angeles based bands.

Setlist: We Are Strange, Transistor, Contaminacion, Crimes Against You, Your Love Will Die, Alma De La Rosa, Hyperventilate, Haunted Spells.
If interested, the band will have their EP release party on February 13th at Non Plus Ultra.
