Song Spotlight: Font's Looking at Engines (a night at Zebulon)

I've been hanging out in the Los Angeles music scene long enough that when I saw the band Font was playing Zebulon, I immediately flashbacked to a band called LA Font. That was a band that played the Los Angeles music scene from around 2008 to 2018. I believe I saw that band band four different times between 2011 and 2014.

Anyways, back to the current Font, their Zebulon set concluded their 11 stop tour across the United States with (all but one stop) Dutch Interior. They're an Austin, TX based band that is heavy on the experimental synthesizers sound. It made an interesting contrast with their touring partners which had an Americana-folk-rock sound without a synth in sight.

Though perhaps most of those at Zebulon were there to welcome home Los Angeles based band Dutch Interior, the crowd was very supportive of Font. They packed the venue for the band, pressing to the stage edge. The audience was not going to act like the typical Los Angeles crowd that stands five feet back from the stage.

Though I didn't notice any setlists around, I suspect that they played a number of songs off their debut album Strange Burden. The band didn't stick with a singular type of synth sound. To my ears, they played up the versatility of the synth. I wrote some notes during the set regarding the opening of each of their 8 songs. I wrote that one song had a playful opening, another sounded like church bells ringing, there was the song that sounded like it was a throwback to the 70s disco era, and finally there was a concluding song that had traces of Vangelis (composer known for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner).

I'll go with "Looking at Engines" as the song spotlight mainly because it has a Twin Peaks haunting intro sound. It seems like the song is about an interesting introduction to a significant other's family.
