Photo Review: Devon Thompson (a night at El Cid)

I first came across Devon Thompson in 2023 at The Smell and a couple times at WFNM in 2024. My 2025 encounter with the rising rocker was in December at El Cid (you can read my song spotlight for "Wishing" and other photos from the night here). Yes, a bit of a long wait to catch another set, but that is just how it is. The one thing I know about Devon Thompson is that she is one of the more photogenic musicians in Los Angeles. There is just a composure to the way she presents herself onstage. I knew I wanted to capture a photo that you'll see after the jump.

The below photo was likely take during the song "Poison Me." The song is a melodic tune that sets the stage for a photo of Thompson being calmly swept away into a state of serenity. I think the look in her eyes so highlights that mental state. I love how she is just ever so slightly arched back away from the microphone, calmly highlighting the momentary guitar instrumental. I also like that lone white lace hanging from the microphone stand. The microphone stand was decorated in white lace, but I just so happened to capture that single one.

El Cid didn't have the brightest lights and were basically flooding her in a purple / magenta-ish light. Not exactly the most color pleasing look. Now I no longer use Lightroom (because I don't like paying a monthly fee), but I did use the basic Canon software and so did a white balance to get a bit more of a skin color tone.

I used the RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens for this photo -- the focal length is 100mm. That helped get the close-up look I wanted. Due to the light levels, I set my shutter speed at 1/250, Aperture at 2.8, and an ISO of 10,000. I would have liked to have taken the shutter speed up to 1/320. There is a slight blurring of her fingers that perhaps would have disappeared with 1/320 vs 1/250. Maybe if I wanted to spend more time on this photo (and perhaps had Lightroom or a similar software) I could better distinguish her hair from the background.
