Song Spotlight: Faetooth's Eviscerate (a night at the Lodge Room)

Before catching their December set at the Lodge Room, I had previously only caught Faetooth once before at Non Plus Ultra. It was 2022 and I was enthralled with their doom metal and the witchy sort of vibes that the band gave off. At the time, they were a four piece that included Ashla Razzano on guitar (currently in an alt-folk band called Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit). What really sticks in my mind is what happened after their set. I believe that Urns and Argyles was playing their set and a mosh pit formed. I was blissfully on my knees taking photos. Standing to my right was guitarist Ari May. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her motioning to me to move. I thought it was a very nice gesture.

Though three years passed before I got to catch another set, I did keep an eye on them. They've made a steady progress in gaining a fan base, up to the point where three years later, they were headlining the Lodge Room to celebrate their sophomore album release Labyrinthine that came out in September. Based on a Doomed Nation article, the band formed in 2019. Their rise to Los Angeles prominence was likely delayed by Covid, but one can't keep a good band down forever, especially one that stuck together through it all.

My main review of the set is up on US Rocker Music, which you can read here

What is the song spotlight? I do admit to loving classical music so should I spotlight "Lacrimosa?" The "Lacrimosa" was part of Mozart's uncompleted Requiem Mass (he died while in the process of the composition). For Faetooth, that was the introduction music that they used to walk onto the stage. That makes me even more enamored with the band. A doom metal band with an appreciation for classical music.

What song perhaps is most similar to "Lacrimosa" than? I'll go with the song "Eviscerate." The song has a slow build that pushes your forward with vocals that are chorus like. Now you do have to contemporize music and Faetooth takes a far left turn for the chorus with vocals that scream out in pain. Personally, I think Mozart would have loved it.

To me, the song is about the facing the struggles of life:

Every ingress is a judgment
A looming resurrection

The band will be spending late January and February doing a headlining tour in Europe. Congrats to them.
