Song Spotlight: Maejoy's Blueberry Lemonade (a night at Hotel Ziggy)

Maejoy closed out the night for me at the WFNM showcase at Hotel Ziggy. It appears that she is currently living in Los Angeles though she recently lived in Las Vegas. From what I can tell, she was ingrained in the Las Vegas music scene, putting together an occasional event called "All The Feels" at The Sand Dollar Downtown.

She's continuing to build a music community in Los Angeles as she held a "Winter Feels" event at the Rhythm Room (amusing enough, the event was held as I was writing up this blog post). That night included a singer-songwriter and a band that I previously covered on this blog: Diana Thale (you can read that article here) and The Sea Monks (you can read that article here). That is definitely an indication that she has good tastes in music - ha ha. If you happen to read that Diana Thale article, I do indicate that she was moving to Nashville - maybe she did, maybe she didn't, that's what I thought at the time.

And on January 7th, she's holding an "All The Feels" event at Hotel Cafe.

Her Spotify bio has the following tidbit, "multi-instrumentalist and multi-talented artist . . .; combining her background as a singer-songwriter and her new sound of indie-pop to form a nostalgic, dreamlike aura with her music." She also mentioned during her set that her sound is a mix of rock and RnB.

She played a five song set, which sounds rather short, but her music composition is thoughtful and is just as important as her lyrics. Some of the songs clocked in at the 5 minute mark. Her song "Let Me Cry" was about a long term relationship that didn't work out and ended soon after their 5 year anniversary mark. She was backed by a full band: guitarist, bassist, and drummer. The instrumentals blended together to provide a lush sound. She herself switched between keys and guitar.

Comment of the set: Are we still feeling good out there? Hell yeah.

From what I can tell, the set focused on new, unreleased material. So my song spotlight goes to "Blueberry Lemonade" from her debut album Love In Technicolor. As I was writing up this article, I had her music playing (trying to find that perfect song to spotlight) and this one immediately got my attention. The song's intro guitar play is intriguing and then the music expands with other instruments joining in, highlighted specifically by trumpet playing that comes in at the perfect moments. The vocals to this love song are lighthearted while singing about the couple's favorite drink. Perhaps this song is referencing the same individual in "Let Me Cry." If so, perhaps this song is being retired from live performances.

Vegas life shines so bright with you.
You're just my type.
And you don't have a clue.

Setlist: Someone Deeper, Feeling My Pain, Crash Out, Let Me Cry, Double Down.
