It was a special night at Bar Lubitsch. Grant Owens of WFNM was celebrating his birthday. Opening up was the recently formed Laguna Hill. The band is the husband-wife team of Ryan and Lena Doyle. They mentioned during the set that they formed the band on the inauspicious date of April 1st, 2026. Also, the recently married couple moved from New York to Laguna Beach. The folk-pop band has Lena on violin and Ryan on guitar. They share vocal duties. Their Spotify bio has this detail about their music, "their music reflects real-life experiences and a shared creative chemistry."

Their set included a mix of originals and cover. The most memorable moment was their cover of Green Day's "Basket Case." Lena mentioned, "We call this next one 'what happens when you marry a classical violinist to a rocker." It is a rather standard cover song, but what made it unique was the mashup of Pachelbel's Canon in D with the punk tune.
The two songs share the same chord progressions. Interesting how a song composed around 1680 has influenced modern music. It got me going down the rabbit hole as the song is mainly known as a wedding song. Back in 2023, WGCU did a write-up about the song. Pachelbel died in 1706 and his music was largely forgotten until 1968 when French conductor Jean-Francois Paillard recorded the tune. Classical radio stations began to play it and then Robert Redford used it in his movie Ordinary People. Around that timeframe, it became a wedding song stable to this date. It was recently featured as the wedding song in Toy Story 5 and Euphoria's Season 3.

The mashup of genres was also featured in their debut single "Meet Me In Nantucket." The song had Ryan going acoustic rocker while Lena started dancing bluegrass style with her violin. It was a fun representation of their set.
The song spotlight goes to "Can't Buy Time (Even with a Million Dollars)." They joked that a million dollars isn't necessarily a lot of money in Los Angeles. The song title largely explains the song theme. But it is also a song about enjoying life with someone you love.
