Song Spotlight: Aden Black's for me (a night at Hotel Ziggy)

Aden Black has been a fixture at the WFNM showcase over the last couple years. Back in 2024, I covered Hailey Wild and she was a backup singer (click on this link for a photo that has Aden Black in it). She's also done a couple of WFNM sets. I was finally able to catch one of those sets at Hotel Ziggy. It was a rare Tuesday night event and the venue was packed. In fact, I might say it was an over flow situation as people were standing out in the lounge area of the hotel. Those fans ranged from their twenties to their sixties.

Per her website bio, she arrived in Los Angeles via St. Louis to attend the USC Thornton School of Music (also Hailey Wild's school). She graduated with a BA in Vocal Performance. As for her music, she "blends pop, rock, soul, R&B, and country elements to create a unique sound."

That BA in Vocal Performance is well deserved, because she has power vocal pipes. When she sang her first song "for you," I was blown away. As for the blending of her music to create a unique sound, I would say that certainly applies to the unreleased song "whipping post." While listening to the song, I wrote down that her vocals sounded like a blending of Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. I made that comparison before seeing her Instagram post where she is covering Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady." The song is a country blues gem and I'm sure it'll show up in her debut EP that should be around the corner.

She tossed in a couple covers. One has to give it up to her Sabrina Carpenter cover "Manchild" where she and her backing singers tossed in some Sabrina-lite dance moves. She ended the set with another original "get back up." An emotional song that had her picking up an acoustic guitar to close out the night.

What did I notice: her keyboardist had some fans with one making sure to position herself in a direct line of site spot so that the two could share some smiles and laughs.

What did I notice 2: before singing her most recent song "not love," she discussed her obsession of Love Island

The song spotlight goes to "for me." She joked about the fact that her first song was called "for you" and the fact that she was following it up with a song called "for me." She said as her backing band was playing the opening lines, "I'm not the best at writing titles." It was potentially the fan favorite of the night. Her vocals perfectly conquer those high power pop octaves.

A song about giving someone who walked out on her a second chance, but having a deep conversation before that second chance.

I want you to be
Not using me

Setlist: for you, for me, Expectations (Katie Pruitt cover), not love, whipping post, jokes on you, Manchild (Sabrina Carpenter cover), get back up.
