Closing out a recent Rocknite showcase at The Goldfish was memoryloop. Interestingly, this was the night of bands who have changed their name. Opening up the night was Essencer, which used to be called Wizard Puffs. (You can read my Song Spotlight post on Essencer here.) Memoryloop used to be called Pedestrian. Both decided to go through name changes in 2024. I will say I do love the choice of memoryloop as a band name. It fits in so perfectly with their ambient shoegaze sounds.

Taking a look at their Instagram page, the four piece band has been around since late 2013. Knowing that they've been around for so long, I decided to do a search of my list of bands that I've seen over the years. Their name did not pop up so this was the first time seeing this band that has been around for over a decade -- I shoot hundreds of bands a year so I always scratch my head wondering how certain bands pass under my radar before I finally hook up with them. One fact I noticed while digging around their Instagram page is that they've played a number of nights with Young Lovers. It makes perfect sense that they'd hook up with that symphonic band.

Their set clocked in at a brief 23 minutes of orchestral rock. Per their lead singer, the set included just three songs (maybe there was a song or two left out of the list she provided as she mentioned that some of the songs were unreleased). Even though the set was brief, the band gave their music the opportunity to breath as the members created a mesmerizing experience for the audience. During a break in the set, a female audience member (creating a very unique growl that sort of sounded like what Godzilla would sound like if that monster creature could talk) yelled out appropriately, "You're f*cking killing it!" What took up a few moments of those 23 minutes was their tuning. They tuned for perfection, which created their ambient sounds that was an impetuous for the audience response.
What did I notice: the three front and center band members all wore glasses. I wear glasses so it stood out to me.

The song spotlight goes to "Afraid of Everything." A song about how the mental health issues of an individual has a negative impact on those who love them. The band sang the lyrics in a whisper as such a heavy moment described deserves. The band provided moments where the lyrics disappear and the music exploded in a manner that represented the pain of those who love the individual suffering through the crisis.
just laid in bedstay here don't disappear stay here
ticking dread waves of nausea
Setlist (potentially partial): Dreamt, Afraid of Everything, Always Was.
