Review: Modern Cult brings Miami mystique to Zebulon

Rocknite did what they do best: highlighted to me a brand new band that thrilled on stage. On a Tuesday night at Zebulon, the first band of the night was Modern Cult. From what I can tell via social media, this Miami based band is so new that they were only playing their second show ever.

What did I notice: the lead singer (Augie Pink) took to the stage with a cup of water and didn't put it down until finishing up the first song of the night. Towards the end of the set, he asked a friend to refill the cup with water. The friend didn't want to leave her spot and gave the cup to another friend to refill with water. Augie Pink looked at her a few moments later and asked her about the water. She mentioned that she had sent someone else to fetch the water.

I got hooked from the first song "Counting Down." The lead singer's timbre vocals were a flashback to The Smiths and The Cure. Their electronic sound also harkened back to those bands. The synth player seemed to be carried off into a beautiful neverland, dancing art-style to the beats. Augie Pink and the band's bassist / keyboardist were dressed to the Miami nines. While singing, Augie Pink's feet were sliding around the stage floor.

Comment of the set: One second please.

Second comment of the set: It is only Tuesday.

Third comment of the set: This is fun. Who would have thought?

Doing some Internet snooping, Augie Pink is from Puerto Rico and used to be in Miami based bands Baby City Club and Plastic Pinks. Baby City Club was a Latin Trap band (you can watch a video to one of their songs here) while Plastic Pinks was a rock band (you can watch their KEXP set here). That music background explains why Modern Cult's Zebulon set was so polished.

Their set ended with a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes."

Setlist: Counting Down, Safe To Say, Better Days, Be My Friend, Tell Me, Work It Out, Myself And You, Flaws, Connection, Heroes (David Bowie cover).
