Song Spotlight: Sour Tongue's SOAP (a night at The Goldfish)

It was a mid-February date and I finally made it out to my first 2026 Rocknite showcase at The Goldfish. That took way too long to catch this showcase during the new year, but I did get sick in mid-January which reduced my opportunities to get out to Highland Park. The first band up on this particular night was Sour Tongue. This was my second time catching the band. I first saw them back in 2023. I apparently see this band when my favorite bands share the bill with them. In 2023, they shared the stage with Lauren Lakis (you can read one of my US Rocker Music reviews about one of her sets here). This time around it was Slugs (you can a song spotlight post here).

What was my first impression of the band as they came up onto the stage? Satori Marill reminded me of a clown character -- not a fun clown at the circus, but a scary clown based on the Stephen King It novel. Maybe it was that two headed teddy bear on her t-shirt. Maybe it was her eyelashes. Maybe it was the Betty Davis eyes. Maybe it was how she tilted her head sometimes in that dead broken neck look (okay, that didn't happen as they were walking up on stage, but during the set). On the other hand, it could have just been the fog machine going on over-drive.

The evil band clowns were going to leave their marks on the Rocknite crowd and they were going to do it immediately. The band opening up with "Me-Mania" that pounded away with guitar, bass, and drums being relentless and then Marill turned parts of the song into a scream fest of nightmares after reading a particular scary portion of a King novel before bedtime.

Their song "Teeth" is about "those things that are in your mouth." Bite me. Bleed me out. I should make mention that the band isn't out there to scare you. They have a fun sense of humor. Their song "Watch This Drive" starts off as a country tune before switching gears into an industrial direction. The song then does a ping-pong between the two genres. They ended the set with a couple unreleased songs. The final song of their set "Well Anyways" was explained as "totally not passive aggressive."

The song spotlight goes to "SOAP" that similar to "Watch This Drive" has a playful genre intro. In this case, they mentioned that they were going to entertain the crowd with some disco. I may disagree with that description. Honestly, I thought it was a playful re-interpretation of Gwen Stefani / No Doubt ska hits. The song switches things into a mosh pit inspiring venture. What is wrong men is the question being asked -- in terms of romantic relationships?
