Song spotlight: Alison Albrecht's Two Hearts (a night at Bar Lubitsch)

It was a special night for Alison Albrecht at her WFNM showcase. The day before, she had celebrated her 26th birthday and Bar Lubitsch was buzzing with good wishes. A friend who took to the stage earlier, gave her a shoutout. Her set ended with her full band (guitar, bass, keys, trombone, drums) playing "Happy Birthday" while the crowd sang the lyrics. While the tune was sung, she looked grateful and then maybe a touch awkward hanging out in front of the microphone. Eventually, she resolved the matter by stepping off the stage. A fun way to celebrate a year around the sun.

The first thing I noticed about Albrecht's set was her vocals. When she sang the unreleased "It's Going Well," I was immediately taken in by her mezzo‑soprano pitch and outgoing personality on stage. It is the reason she was on Season 24 of The Voice (2023) - team Reba McEntire. She's had over a decade to perfect those vocals -- her first self-titled EP was released in 2015.

For her song "Lifeline," the crowd sang along during the lyrics: I don't need your lifeline anymore. She opened up emotionally during her song "When Everything Else Falls Apart." Her band stepped off the stage so that she could do a solo with her acoustic guitar. She mentioned that when she was in grade school, she wrote about her friends. When she was in high school, she wrote about boys who didn't like her back. Now at 26, she was having to deal with the death of those close to her. The song was about the loss of her grandmother.

After what she described as the "emo moment," she got the vibes at Bar Lubitsch back up when she sang the Hannah Montana cover "Rock Star." The vibe shift was more associated with the female persuasion in the crowd. Before singing the song, Albrecht joked about how she took her keyboardist to Michigan (her home state). She mentioned he was impressed by lyrics that he came across in her childhood home. He was unaware that those lyrics were from the Hannah Montana (aka Miley Cyrus) song. When she finished the song, she gave a shout out, "That one was for the girls."

The song spotlight goes to "Two Hearts," which is found on her most recent EP Hurts to Be Wiser. A
rock-pop tune that debates pros and cons of boys and men and independence and love and reconciling two hearts (thoughts, values, opinions). Sung with what has to be considered a patented Alison Albrecht brightness.

I thought we fought for this
But I like the way your words make me feel

What amusing Albrecht tendency did I notice: while stepping away from the microphone, she had this tendency to stick out her tongue. Miley Cyrus inspired?

Setlist: It's Going Well, Two Hearts, Lifeline, When Everything Else Falls Apart, Rock Star (Hannah Montana cover), Hollyhock.
