Song Spotlight: JESSA's Half Naked (a night at Bar Lubitsch)

JESSA (Jessa Hadik's mononymous name) took to the Bar Lubitsch stage for the WFNM showcase, bringing along her broken hearted emotions, "I'm not singing about all my happy, heartfelt, amazing . . . whatever. I've dealt with a lot of heartbreak." Those feelings were expressed via pop / R&B vibes.

She opened up her set with the pop tune "Feel It" where heartbreak was worn on the sleeves, "Make me feel so good then useless." Her more R&B vibes "Baskin Robbins" was introduced with the thought that men want a different flavor of woman every day of the month. Later she asked if it was strange that she likes mint chocolate chip ice cream. Everyone in the crowd appeared to agree that mink chocolate chip ice cream is gross. It was claimed that it tastes like tooth paste. General hatred of the ice cream flavor even made an episode of Modern Family. I might have been the only person in the audience that sided with Hadik. I apparently have weird taste buds, because I do like mint chocolate chip.

She closed out her set with two unreleased songs: "Pessimist" and "Could Have Been Me." Those two songs showed her vulnerability and "Pessimist" particularly was how she was pessimistic about finding love. It was almost as if she was about to tear up during the song and needed a comforting hug afterwards. Making the song even more emotional was that she took to the acoustic guitar for the song -- the only song where she went to the guitar.

The song spotlight goes to "Half Naked" that was a song in the same vein as "Pessimist" and is from her debut album LA BOYS (obviously, it isn't a positive portrayal of LA boys). She described the song as follows, "The metaphor there is where I've been dating somebody and when I start to get comfortable with them and expose myself a little more, show a little bit more vulnerability, that's when they leave. That is not fun. It makes me wonder if someone can't even want me when they've seen just part of me - how can I expect someone to want me for all of me."

It is an emotional singer-songwriter stab in the heart that also takes themes from "Baskin Robbins."

You let me feel safe then
Got bored and walked away
My God, that's so humiliating

Interesting side notes: has a fear of pulling microphones out of microphone stands and can't adjust guitar straps.

Setlist: Feel It, Baskin Robbins, Worth the Heartbreak, Crazy in Love (BeyoncĂ© cover), Half Naked, Pessimist, Could Have Been Me.
