Song Spotlight: Hotel Fiction's Ghost of Me (a night at the Regent Theater)

Back in early February, the editor of US Rocker Music sent over a request for coverage of Hotel Fiction that was playing the Regent Theater on March 6th. The band was opening for The Strumbellas. The request revolved around coverage and a potential interview with the band. I have a regular job as well as keeping this personal blog site up and running. Putting in extra research into coming up with questions for a band can be draining. My default was that I was only interested in photographing and writing a review of the night. Before responding, I decided to check out their music (I had never heard of the band). It didn't take long for me to fall hard for their tunes. I decided to put in the extra time to come up with some questions for the band. You can read my US Rocker Music review as well as the band's full interview here

My favorite response from the band is the following:

US Rocker: Is there something unique about the band that you’d like to share?

Hotel Fiction: We have telepathy. That’s our fun fact. While we were writing this on facetime with each other Jess wrote **redacted inappropriate joke** in the Google Doc and Jade simultaneously said **same joke** without reading her writing. So we figured it was fate and we had to include that in here now. We often show up somewhere matching in similar outfits without discussing it. Or say the same thing at the same time. What we’re trying to say is we’re on the same wavelength. Our telepathic powers only grow stronger with each passing day.

One items I left out of the US Rocker review was what I observed prior to the set. I got to the venue way too early (like 30 minutes too early). I was standing outside, waiting for the doors to open at 7 p.m. (they actually opened about 10 minutes before the official door time). A couple of people were hanging out near The Strumbellas' tour bus that was parked outside the venue. Out came Jessica Thompson (vocals, lead guitar) and Jade Long (vocals, keys) to talk with the couple. After a few minutes of talking, the group took off towards Little Tokyo (I don't know if they ended up in Little Tokyo, just that they went in that direction).

Will this band blow up in the near future and trips like that through the streets of downtowns just won't be possible? Time will tell, but I would not be surprised if they're soon headlining much larger venues across the country.

The song spotlight goes to "Ghost of Me," a tune about heartbreak that still linger (perhaps after years have passed). It is a song that is filled with questions about how the life of the former lover is going. Who knows when the breakup happened, but our songwriter is still keeping track of the individual. She knows the person has a new job and has a new girlfriend.

How's your new job?
How's your new girl?
Is she pretty?
Is she your world?

Those lyrics are sung against the backdrop of a wistful tune of alternative rock.

Setlist: Still Frozen, Sunrise, Athens GA, Ghost of Me, Margot, Counterfeit, Time Machine, Why Do Good Things Have to End.
