Glendale News: Vacant building on Colorado St catches fire

Whenever I run into something interesting in Glendale, I always like to take a look at the Glendale News Press (“Firefighters hurt in blaze, Veronica Rocha, 30 November 2009) to see if something newsworthy occurred. On Monday morning I was driving to work when I came across police blocking off roads and a fire truck on Colorado. The area was littered with debris. And so the story is: Vacant building on Colorado St. catches fire for the second time in three days . . . The massive fire prompted police and fire crews to shut down Colorado Street between Pacific Avenue and San Fernando Road for hours. Traffic lanes had been shut to the Golden State (5) Freeway for much of the morning commute while fire crews battled the blaze and started shoring up the site . . . Forty-four firefighters from Glendale and Burbank extinguished the blaze in less than two hours. The cause of the fire was under investigation, but fire officials said a smaller fire that was put out inside the building Saturday may be an indication of what happened Monday . . . “It appears some homeless people have been living inside that structure,” he said.
