Song Spotlight: Silverdeer's Open Mouth (a night at Gold-Diggers)

It was a Friday night and Silverdeer (previously known at Saturn 17) wanted everyone to enjoy the start of the weekend. They played a relatively short 20 minute set to open up the Rocknite showcase at Gold-Diggers, but those minutes were packed with a festive attitude that had the crowd dancing.

The Nika Fazeli (guitar) and Halsey Bousquet (vocals) band started off the set with the aggressive and raw "Drift" that immediately sent hearts pounding. Their unreleased song "Anywhere" was introduced with Bousquet saying, "Get your tissues ready." The song may be lyrically somber, but at one point she yelled out "Ready?," which was a signal for the band to ignite into an instrumental jam.

What did I notice? I was standing near their bassist. In the back of my mind, I was worried that the headstock of the bass was either going to smack me in the head or slam into my camera lens. Luckily, neither happened. Who wants a potential black eye over the weekend? Bousquet was wearing glitter. The band had no setlist on the stage so I did love the fact that she gave the name of the song before the start of each song. Fazeli was all smiles, soaking in the enthusiasm of the crowd.

"Are you ready to get freaky, Rocknite?" That was the introduction to the final song (and song spotlight) of their set, "Open Mouth." The band had earned the audience's adoration and when Bousquet asked, "Come closer, come closer," the crowd stepped forward to the edge of the stage. The band delivered on that audience response by bouncing on stage in appreciation. Their kinetic energy was once again on full play display during an instrumental moment as band members got on their knees to put every ounce of their souls into the performance. Bousquet was having so much fun, it appeared that she accidentally cut off her microphone for the last seconds. Did she show any panic about that? Nope. When she saw a friend holding up the camera phone in her direction, she just played it up for the video.

The song itself is about sexual desire and exploration (you can watch the music video here, which skirts with the NSFW boundaries so be discrete if you come across this write-up at work).
