I cross paths with Sun Colony on occasion. I first caught the band back in late 2018. At the time, Lauren Andino from Tremours and L.A. Witch was playing guitar with the band. I do believe this was the first time I saw her on stage. Since that time, the band has gone through some line-up changes, but their shoegaze sound remains intact via founding member Derek Mabra. (In some ways, Andino has also kept that shoegaze tradition going via Tremours.)

I noticed that the band was celebrating their EP release Clandestine Vignette at Zebulon with a promotional assist via The Witching Hours. I figured it was time to catch the band once more. The band started it all off with, "F*ck, it's Monday, Holy Sh*t." I've got to say that Monday has a special connection to the Los Angeles music scene for me. That was the night pre-pandemic when I rotated from venue to venue to catch residency bands.

Their first song was "Swane." The melodic shoe gaze swept me into a spiritual daze. I made a mental note that I just don't catch enough shoe gaze bands. It swept me back over a decade when many of my favorite bands were at minimum shoegaze adjacent such as Great Northern. Only thing that was missing was the fog machine. Mabra played his guitar like we were watching him play through a surreal mirror. There was dancing in the audience. As I drifted towards the back of the crowd to attempt some photos from that distance, I noticed two individuals having the time of their lives dancing with abandon.

For the song spotlight, I'm going to go with the opus from the EP, "Aerodyne," that clocks in at 5 minutes and 13 seconds. The song starts out with a slow burn instrumental that builds over the course of a minute plus. Lead singer Kris Balocca enters with sonic vocals intensify the listener's belief that they're reaching a state of nirvana.
Setlist: Swane, Null, Deserted Peace, Disdain, Writhe, Aerodyne, Slow Burn, I Breathe You.
