Horse Rider opened up a The Witching Hours night at Zebulon. From what I can tell, they're an Austin based band that has since moved out to Los Angeles. I was impressed with how they perfectly blended their bass and guitar play to create their layered music that slowly unfolded. The lyrics (as per my interpretation) leans towards how people deal with various difficulties that life throws at a person and sometimes not for the better. For example, their song "Call" starts off with the lyrics, "When you pick up the gun. Not gonna let em talk to you that way." Is it about a school shooter or an encounter with this individual, "Im just sittin at the corner store."

I attempted to do an Internet search on the band, but didn't come up with much other than they're from Austin. Sometimes you do have to question what pops up via AI searches. I went to Bing and got the following response about their debut album Real Melody: The album has received positive reviews, with one review calling it "arguably the best Emo album of all time." Ha ha, I did enjoy the set, but that seems over the top. Their Instagram account does indicate that the team over at Rocknite has already discovered the band. It is hard to beat out Rocknite in uncovering blissful new bands. This review will post after their Oct 9th set at The Smell, but I found it amusing that the night will be a horse show including bands called: Lucky Horse Red, Horse Rider, and Charlie Horse. I've always argued that there needs to be a Moon night that would include bands like: Moonfuzz, Moonily, and the return of Moon Honey.

Comment of the set: We have a few more and than you can f*ck off . . . for like 10 minutes.
What did I notice: the band kept two guitars on the floor instead of on guitar stands. Sorry, when I see that, I always get freaked out that said owner of that guitar will accidentally take a few steps back too far and step right on their instrument.

One has to go with the self-titled song "Horse Rider" as the song spotlight, which comes from their 2022 debut EP How 2 Ride. The band closed out their set with that song. The song is played with feedback ringing out and conflicting (purposeful so as not to contradict my initial thoughts about the band) clashes of instruments.
An attempt to be free and yet being pushed down with negativity?
