I love randomly heading out on nights when I don't know any of the bands. If the night is free, it is all the better, because there is low risk (just my time) to taking a chance on unknown bands / musicians. Promoters such as AM Presents Music, Ryan Pollie, Swyndle, and WFNM as well as Zebulon (venue) over the last few years have provided me with that opportunity. Recently, Rocknite over at the The Goldfish has stepped into the mix.

In the middle of September, I looked at Rocknite's Instagram page to see what was going on for their Wednesday night showcase. As is usual, I didn't know a single one of the three acts. I decided to head on out. It so happened that this was my third straight night out so I was thinking about cutting the night short after the first two acts. I don't know why, but after the second act I decided to stick around for a song or two of the next band, Still Blank. I really don't know why. Maybe I wasn't feeling as tired out as I expected. Maybe it was because there was a surge of people towards the front as soon as the second band finished up their set (which always perks up my attention).

The first song "Cut Slack" was all that was needed to convince me that I was sticking around for more than just the first two songs. That song had me thinking about The Cranberries' "Linger." It wasn't just the Dolores O'Riordan vocals, but the music that all rang out The Cranberries.

The band's core is the duo of Jordy (from Hawaii) and Ben (from Manchester). For the night, the expanded band included an additional guitarist, bassist, and drummer. Their music was met throughout the set with ecstatic screams and cheers from the crowd. I swear it was like I was listening to the responses that I heard when first coming across Local Natives. Yes, I'm expecting this band to blow up big.

Their song "What About Jane" is my song spotlight. The music has a Jesse Jo Stark touch. Who is Jane? The Jane in the song is Jane Birkin (an actress perhaps best known for the movie Blow-Up -- I say that because I've seen that movie). Under the Radar has this insight that revolved from the discussion around the actress, "That turned into a bigger conversation about identity and how we’re seen."

You were stoned after church
Moment of the set: The Goldfish stage is a decent size for a local Los Angeles club stage, but there were four members of the band at the front and so it was a tight fit. There was a moment were Jordy and Ben bumped into each other. You could tell that Jordy was momentarily startled by the body slam she took.
Setlist: Cut Slack, What About Jane, Dead, Vacancy, Same Sun, Get Over It, Ain't Quite Right.
