Review: Movie Club has the Soundtrack to Your Favorite Movies

Movie Club reached out to me in August 2023 to see if I was interested in coming to their residency at Harvard & Stone. I wasn't able to catch their immediate night as I had plans to catch a couple bands at Zebulon. The following week, I got sick. They pinged me a couple months later about a set they were playing at Gold-Diggers. Not only did I get to catch their set for the first time ever, but I also got to cross paths again with Wargirl (a band I hadn't seen since 2017, but left an impression at the time). What's the point of this background? Every so often bands reach out to me and I have to decline. But hey, keep asking, because I do my best to eventually make it out to a set (as long as the set is played in my definition of the core Los Angeles music scene or better explained as within a 10 mile radius of Glendale -- ha ha).

After catching their set at Gold-Diggers, they responded to one of my Q&As. Here's a response that explains both their band name and their instrumental rock genre that can be traced backed to musicians such as Steve Vai and Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein", "Movie Club was born of a deep love of movies and film scores, and a mutual desire to play and record as much as possible." The Venice based two piece is Jessamyn Violet on drums and Vince Guneo on guitar.

In October, I got to catch up with the band once again, this time around it was at Permanent Records Roadhouse during a Desert Daze showcase night. The duo put their own personalities out there. Jessamyn Violet had a country fashion sense with drum sticks that are under command to entertain. Vince Guneo has the beach look and hair that flings.

Back to that 2023 timeframe, they released their sophomore album Great White. Let's have some fun and see what sort of movies I imagined while listening to some of the songs in the album.

"Requiem" has that anticipatory sound that you hear in movies such as Interstellar. "Spinner" has a neo-noir vibe of a Michael Mann movie like Heat or Thief.  "Thresher" has a busy city lights sound that reminds you of a New York City based movie like Wall Street. "Dusk" reminded me of the SciFi classic Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home or the more recent classic Dune. "Galapagos" felt like it would fit in perfectly with an ensemble cast movie such as The Magnificent Seven or The Wild Bunch. The concluding song "Goblin" feels like that inevitable rise to power in the television shows Game of Thrones / House of Dragons.

Upcoming set: Dec 5th at The Venice West, opening for Dengue Fever.
