Song Spotlight: Miya Folick's La Da Da (a night at the Lodge Room)

I came across Miya Folick in 2017 at the EchoplexMoon Honey had the Monday night residency. Miya Folick and Smoke Season were the openers. What a wonderful night of music. It just gives me flashbacks to those monthly residencies. Here's what I wrote about her set:

Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" was playing while Miya Folick set up her gear. I noticed her singing along for a few lines. Well, to me, that was a good hint that I was going to love her set. It was a power packed set with depth and energy. Even then, she was able to take a moment and call out to her mom in the audience, "Do you need ear plugs?" The answer was yes and Miya quickly provided her with some. What I found via an Internet search: she found at least one band mate via Tinder. How about that.

What strikes me know about that review is her thoughtfulness.

It took a few years before I got to catch another set -- all the way to 2024. By this time, she was headlining the Echoplex during Echo Park Rising. Here's what I wrote of that set:

The focus of the festival was Miya Folick at the Echoplex. Most stages, including upstairs at The Echo, had their last sets by 9 p.m. as if it was an indication that everyone needed to head to one location by 10:15 p.m. Her 9 song set included a trio of songs from her 2023 album “Roach” as well as six songs from her upcoming album. Based on the audience reaction, it is sure to be a success, especially the song “La Da Da.” One has to say this about Folick, she’s very tolerant of drunk people. She found one individual particularly amusing who wasn’t heckling, but was being drunkenly disruptive. She was in on the joke that she was dealing with someone who had way too many drinks during the festival. Everyone laughed along with her. She also mentioned her fond memories of hanging out at The Echo / Echoplex, sometimes five days a week. A hometown crowd. A hometown festival.

What strikes me about that review is her patients.

I've never had a conversation with Folick. I'm not even sure how often we even hung out at The Echo / Echoplex at the same time. She mentioned above that she used to spend up to five days a week at The Echo. For my part, though I used to love going to residencies at The Echo, I suspect I only went twice a month. I'd have to go through my records to verify that, but I did have a tendency (and still do) to jump around venues. Anyways, I have this feeling based on those two sets and my perceptions from watching her on stage, is that she is a very kind individual.

Now in 2025, I noticed that she was headlining the Lodge Room. Working with US Rocker Music, I obtained a press pass / photo pass. If you so wish, you can read my review here

During the set, she didn't go into any explanations about the song. But if my recollection is correct, she mentioned during Echo Park Rising that the song represented her queer identity. She had recently broken up with a woman and was now dating a man and this song represented these two relationships. It is such a playful song the dichotomy of life.

You like getting high at night
I like to go to sleep dreaming of
Sapphic fantasies my love

You like getting high at night
I like to wait for you inside our bed
And tell you what's inside my head my love

I will say that I hope the next time I catch a set the time gap is much more similar to the time gap between the second and third times I saw her versus the first and second.
