Song Spotlight: Mac Hanson's Alfa Romeo (a night at Gold-Diggers)

Mac Hanson used to play under the moniker Joshua & The Holy Rollers. I caught a set back in 2018 at The Hi Hat (current location of The Goldfish). It was a high energy set. I later caught a portion of a set while running and gunning at the 2019 Echo Park Rising. Fast forward to June 2025 and I was looking for something to do on a Sunday night. I happened to notice that Swyndle was doing a free night at Gold-Diggers. First off, I realized that I hadn't gone to Gold-Diggers yet in 2025 and the year was basically half way over. (Once I got to the venue, someone that I run across every so often at various venues mentioned that she hadn't see me at Gold-Diggers in a very long time. Totally true.) Also, I noticed that Mac Hanson was doing a Single Release party. I'm always good for an album, EP, or single release party.

I will admit that I initially had no clue who this Mac Hanson was. I decided to head on over to his Instagram page. Then I noticed that in the bio there was a link to his "old band" @jthrmusic. That was all I needed to convince me to leave the confines of my apartment and drive on down to Gold-Diggers.

He kicked the set off with "Don't You Know It." It is a quirky rock song that addresses the topic of being a father to a new born baby. The released version has the voice of his child ending the song with, "Let's play robots." After finishing the song he told the audience, "God it feels good to rock." Maybe he meant, "God it feels good to get out of the house every so often."

His band included some familiar faces. Dario Bronco was on keys and on occasion guitar. Daniel Sheron on bass. Eli Wulfmeier on guitar. I've actually seen all three of those individuals fronting their own projects. Bronco plays under d'Bronco. Sheron plays in Balto. Interestingly enough, Balto played that 2018 show at The Hi Hat. Wulfmeier fronts Leroy From The North. I should not forget the drummer, Joey LaRosa. I believe he's a long time collaborator with Hanson so I'm sure I saw him playing the drums for Joshua & The Holy Rollers.

The song "Black Sheep" had Hanson going solo for the song. "Precious Time" had many in the audience holding out their phones to capture the moment.

The song of the set was held to the end. He mentioned on Instagram his thoughts on the song, "I don’t think I’ve been more thrilled about creating something. I love this tune. I love the harmonies. I love the little joke of it, and the hard truths in it."

If life gives you lemons.
Drive an Alfa Romeo.

The alt rock tune is all about positive thinking and not going down in defeat.

Setlist: Don't You Know It, Our Friends, Lucky Too, Finding It, Black Sheep, Precious Time, Without You (Harry Nilsson cover), I Want To, Alfa Romeo.
