Song Spotlight: BANDANNA's 10 Stories (a night at Hotel Ziggy)

I really do enjoy catching the opening band or singer when I head out on any particular night. One never knows if you'll catch a gem. Then there are those times when I walk into a venue (often because I've misjudged the start times) and the opening band is just about to end their set. That's what happened when I saw Gypsum for the first time at The Smell. I caught maybe half a song, but I knew I was going to love that band from that moment onwards. Now some of you who come across this are saying, who is Gypsum? Members of the band included Rosie Tucker and  Sapphire Jewell (who tours with illuminati hotties).

Not to the same degree as with Gypsum, but this also happened on a recent Tuesday night at Hotel Ziggy during a WFNM night. I left work a few minutes later than I normally do when I head out that way, but as I was walking into the venue it was a minute or two before 7:30 p.m., which I felt meant I was slipping in at just the right moment. Oops. I walked in and Bandanna was obviously a few songs into her set. I probably missed two or three songs (one of those songs I did hear about 10 seconds worth of it). I knew rather immediately that I loved the music and was somewhat irritated with myself for not walking out the work door 15 minutes sooner.

Bandanna is the moniker for Anna Ord. She was performing a solo acoustic set, playing half the set on guitar (which I missed except for 1 song) and the other half on the keys. She mentioned that she usually performs with a guitarist. Her Spotify account states that she grew up a fan of The Killers and U2. I approve of those bands. "Her music thoughtfully explores themes of trust, nostalgia, grit, and faith, blending powerful choruses with evocative synths . . . "

That exploration of trust could be heard in the song "10 Stories." Prior playing the song on keys, she described it as taking a risk on love from 10 stories up with both people walking towards each other on a tightrope. You could tell that the song had meaning to her as she got very animated as she provided descriptive visuals with her arms and hands. The song has the most upbeat pop positivity.

I don't even have to worry
You're walking the tightrope too
Now I'm on the edge, ten stories
And I just wanna dance with, dance with you

I'm looking forward to catching a full set and with a backing guitarist.
